Emptiness Waits

…for us all

Treasured recollections
drifting like smoke
day after week after month
I watch our pictures fade
like flowers fade in the sun
their petals withering
in scented misery
each precious memory lost
takes a piece of me away
I try to hold them close
but they slip through my fingers
like sand on a windy day

I know that you are gone
only your echoes remain
echoes of your voice
echoes of your touch
they haunt me like ghosts
all that we were now vanishing
like smoke into thin air
lost but never forgotten

we meet again in dreams
where in my devastation
I rewrite our story in my mind
but the truth cannot be denied
always coming to light
in the awakening
a never-ending cycle
a pendulum swinging
back and forth
between love and loss
a familiar dance that I repeat
over and over again

my heart knows no other way
than this endless repetition
this never-ending cycle
and when the morning comes
once more another day begins
memories of you still call unseen
from their gossamer webs
in the corners of dreams

but here it is always winter in my soul
dried flowers between pages
my candle dies in the silence
emptiness waits for us all
