…remember that song

I remember
remember that song
so many
so many songs
really
but the one
the one
where the smoke
the smoke
gets in your eyes
that song
I remember that song
because the smoke
the smoke
it sets me weeping
as it obscures
obscures the view
the pictures
pictures of you

swirling in
dissonantly heavy
so heavy
in the face of its light
its light
and transient nature
the smoke
pulling
pulling me
into the dark
into the darkest
of deep waters
deep waters
where the light
the light
does not penetrate
and time
time
is stationary

I am breathing
breathing it in
the wild possibility
that traces
traces of you
remain
floating
floating unseen
those hazy
shifting
shifting tendrils
tendrils
that linger
linger long after
after you
after you are
after you are gone
gone

I imagine your face
your face
reflected
in still
and silent
silent waters
of sorrow
sorrow
just out of my reach
my reach
and at risk
at risk
of sudden breach

just the lightest
lightest
touch
of the softest
softest
breath
of the sweetest
sweetest
breeze
brings me
to my knees
my knees
as the ripples
the ripples
carry you
carry you far
far from me
me

and again
I am defeated
defeated
I have nowhere
nowhere
to turn
no remedy
for my endless
pain
pain deep
deep in my soul
my soul
where the flames
the flames
still burn
and they burn
and they
burn
and
they
burn
