Jean-Baptiste Greuze — The Broken Mirror (c.1762–3)

All is not what it seems
what it appears
Change, subtle, yet perceptible
The mirror cracked, shattered
Within, a fractured reflection
a flawed portrait

Disfigured by rupture
Shining bright duplicity
delivered by imperfection
Reality sought in vain
in the reflection
obscured by the breach

Broken
without complete separation
Hanging together
in pieces
Displaying a lie
a false reflection

Hand outstretched
Tracing crevices
with a fingertip
Moving away from yourself
in different directions
on reflection

Out of reach
in your face
Maintaining a brittle hold
on sanity
Struggling
with the concept

Flawed disclosure
defective reflection
Vital pieces
of the puzzle
Lost
within the fissures

Frustrating glimpses
of the truth
Crouched
in crevices
Hiding
from reflection

All is not what it seems
what it appears
Change, subtle, yet perceptible
The mirror cracked, shattered
on reflection
