Softly

…oh how softly

Gathered glints
of dappled sunlight
branches bare themselves
painless and without lament
their emptiness fills the sky

their lost leaves dancing
in swirling showers
spiralling down
with unheard pealing
and petals float
phantom like
a murmur
of confused colours
falling gently like snow

amongst the weeping trees
now barren of blooms
raindrops are beating
fading blossoms
huddled in the dirt
then suddenly
there is silence
nothing moves
softly oh how softly
all lies sleeping
